Science

At Chesham Preparatory School, we strive to stimulate a child's curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. We teach methods of scientific enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way science will affect their future on a personal, national and global.

The aims of the Science Department

-  To promote curiosity, enthusiasm and interest in Science

-  To stretch the imagination of young people and encourage them to ask question

-  To understand the affect Science has on community and society as a whole

The School uses the National Curriculum for Science as the basis of its curriculum planning. The Common Entrance and QCA Schemes of Work are used as a basis of the overall scheme of work which is maintained and developed on termly basis. Senior school Science is delivered by specialist staff who seek to ensure that pupils experience science in a way that is both sufficiently challenging, yet appropriately tailored, to their individual needs. The Science curriculum in the senior school is designed to show continuity and progression in learning built on what is taught in the lower and middle schools.

All topics taught from years 3-8 have a wide variety of experimental work integrates into Schemes of Work. The laboratory is well equipped with smart board, data loggers and other ICT equipment.

The Science department is also runs several science trips and an exciting Science Club. Trips include Common Entrance Environmental fieldwork at Mop End, College Lake for Year 5 pupils and ‘Target Mars' Day for Year 6.
