The 22nd May proved to be a wholly memorable day full of excitement, community and charity. The entire day was given over to fund-raising with the proceeds being shared between the chosen charities of each house. The children were encouraged to wear fancy dress following the theme of ‘My Hero' and for this privilege they paid £1.Many events were organised including the decorating of house shields, a sponsored bounce, a variety of stalls, pot-holing and a talent contest.
The day began with an inspirational assembly in which representatives of the children's charities we support spoke. Bruce Oliver and Bishop Mark Kariuki, who had travelled from our project in Kenya several days earlier spoke on behalf of Eagles wings and Mrs Byatt on behalf of Toybox. Stirred by the assembly, the children then split into their houses and worked on their collective house shields.
The Talent Show followed and after weeks of auditions the final ten acts battled it out for first prize. The acts were truly amazing – there is much talent at Chesham Prep. They ranged from solo musical/dance performances to group dance acts. The standard was incredibly high and all the performances were memorable and humbling but there, sadly, could only be one winner. The winner was decided by the audience, using a clever voting system devised by Mrs Cooper, and the act that they chose as the winner was Jason Elvin and his truly talented guitar playing. We were also treated to comedy acts and solo performances later in the day including a guest appearance by ‘Tina Turner'!
Throughout the afternoon the children worked hard and held a mini enterprise fair at which children could spend their money. The total amount raised was over £2,000 which will be divided between the house charities.
Founder's Day, organised by the Founder's Day committee chaired by Mrs Boyd and Mrs Cooper, proved to be a true reflection of the spirit created by our founder Mrs Christina Adlington.
