Homework (or Prep) is designed to support a child’s learning not to extend it. Parents should not expect copious amounts of homework to be set each night. Homework tasks should be manageable, worthwhile and achievable within the recommended time allocated. This time is supposed to allow all abilities to complete the homework task; the more able might complete within the allotted time, whilst the slowest child might need to be stopped a few minutes after the time has elapsed. Tasks might include; learning ahead of a test; a comprehension exercise; a brief writing task; finishing off a piece of work; or research into a new topic.
