and made many exciting things – roads, aqueducts, mosaics and baths with hot water.
We listened to stories and acted different scenes of Roman life. Charlie was a prisoner and enjoyed being handcuffed but
the chain hurt as it pulled his neck. Prisoners were treated very badly.
Only the rich could afford luxuries and slaves. We
acted this but it was horrible as slaves had to run around a lot, give
all their money to the rich and do everything they were told to do. The rich people were very lazy and forced their slaves to do everything for them. If they were in a bad mood, the slave had to cheer them up and would not be fed until their master was happy. The slaves slept in the lowest rooms in the house and slept on a straw mattress which usually was full of fleas.
We thought Roman food was disgusting – stuffed dormouse, salad, goat, snails and sausages. You
had to know who had made the sausages because if you didn’t you
wouldn’t know what they had been made out of – it could have been cat or
dog!
We learned about the Roman army, Latin commands and weapons. The
armour was very heavy and dug into Dan’s, Sam’s, Jake’s and Thomas’s
shoulders and the shields were almost as tall as they were. Only the best could be a Roman soldier. He had to be brave, disciplined and have excellent listening skills.
We loved the day; it was a good experience and lots of fun. We learned a lot and it was fascinating to see so many Roman artefacts.
