We aim to foster enjoyment and develop confidence in languages from an early age at Chesham Prep. In Nursery and Reception, children follow specifically designed courses in both Spanish and French. The approach to learning is oral based focussing mainly on an introduction to culture, particularly in French, with our teacher being a native speaker.

We try to make cross-curricular links and new language is introduced through games, role-play and songs.

Children have one lesson per week in both French and Spanish.

Junior School

Throughout the school, children are taught by subject specialists in both languages. All lessons are interactive and the children are encouraged to use the target language as much as possible. The Interactive Whiteboard is constantly used as a teaching and learning aid across the year groups. As the children go through the school, more written work is introduced. However, at this stage, the majority of language covered is through the skills of listening, reading and speaking.

Children have one lesson per week in both French and Spanish.

Senior School

Our pupils are offered the opportunity to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, learn about language and language-learning skills, and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity.

Firmly embedding language-learning within its wider cultural context, the Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is supported by a wide variety of opportunities for pupils to apply and extend their experience in authentic situations. These include subscriptions to Language websites such as Linguascope and This is Language and we also enjoy various cultural celebrations throughout the year, including activities such as tapas tasting and special assemblies. These activities firmly underline our belief that the ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

In Years 6, 7 and 8 there is the opportunity for pupils to participate in the annual language residential trip. In recent years we have been to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.

Children have two lessons per week of languages in year 5. In year 6, this increases to three. In year 7 pupils study Spanish or French and have 3 lessons per week. We follow a more rigid scheme of work in KS3, aimed at preparing pupils for Common Entrance exams.
