Sport forms an important part of life at Chesham Prep School. From Reception all of our children get to experience a wide variety of different sporting activities through PE and games lessons as well as in a wide variety of clubs.

The ethos of the sports department is very much one that every child be given the opportunity to develop their potential to the very best of their abilities. With this in mind, the children receive coaching from experienced teachers, each with their own fields of expertise. All children get the opportunity to play in competitive matches, through fixtures against other schools from Year 3 and during our House competitions. The emphasis is always on enjoyment with the aim that our children leave us with a love of sport and a desire to continue participating which will stay with them throughout their life.

School fixtures are the highlight of the week. We run teams at every age group and include as many children as possible in an extensive list of competitive matches against local schools. Teams compete at district, regional and national level.

Central to the approach to sport at Chesham is our dedication to teamwork and fitness. Children are taught the benefits to health that daily exercise provides.
Children are encouraged to work together for a common aim and are taught the importance of winning with grace and losing with dignity. The school has high expectations of all of our children; that they will display excellent levels of courtesy, good manners and a high level of sportsmanship at all times, whilst being good guests or hosts.

Rugby

Rugby is one of the major boys’ games. Training commences at the beginning of the Michaelmas term. The boys start learning to play rugby in Reception and this is built on in games in the Prep School. We are affiliated to the ESRFU and as such follow the guidelines laid down in the RFU continuum concerning junior players.

As a department we are firm believers in allowing as many of the boys to play in competitive matches as possible. To this end, we regularly put out A, B, C and D fixtures and on occasions we are able to play E and F matches as well.

Rugby is a real strength of the school and the U9s are the current holders of the Davenies inter- school tournament. Our U9 and U11 teams qualify for the National schools rugby competition at Epsom College each year.

Cross Country

Cross Country is a popular activity for boys and girls. We enter the local schools competitions for years 3-6 and there are several external competitions, including the National Prep Schools Competition in Malvern.

Football

Football is the main sport played in the Lent term and as with rugby, every boy is expected to represent the school in competitive matches. Last year we were able to field 19 different teams and this involved every boy in the school representing the school on a single day. Each team has a large number of matches throughout the season and as is the case with rugby we believe that football builds confidence in boys and really helps them feel part of a team and indeed the children feel proud to represent their school.
In Years 1-4 Wycombe Wanderers lead a number of football clubs throughout the year allowing for pupils to continue to develop their skills under the provision of excellent football coaches.

Cricket

Cricket is the major boys’ sport in the summer and we field a senior school team and three or four teams at each of the age groups. Throughout the school the children are encouraged to play enjoyable winning cricket. Boys start to play with a hard ball in Year 4 and the skills are fine- tuned and by the time the children reach Year 6 we regularly have boys entered for county trials. The school have fantastic indoor nets in the sports hall with a bowling machine and this facility is also offered as an activity. As with all sports at Chesham Prep School cricket is played to build confidence, make friends and most importantly, to be enjoyed. Bucks County Coaches currently run a Cricket nets club.

Athletics

Athletics is taught throughout the summer term when children learn all of the major track and field disciplines taught by specialist teachers. We enter several school competitions, including the National School Athletics competition.

Hockey

Hockey currently runs during the Autumn term and is a passion for many Chesham Prep girls. When entering the school many girls have never held a hockey stick but quickly adapt to the sport. The fundamental skills are taught from Year 1 and teams are run from Year 3 to 8. The girls compete in a range of competitions from intra and inter school matches to national competitions, with many regional successes at U11. A tour is arranged for senior girls to Jersey and a number of girls are recommended for the local county development squad.

Netball

Netball is the main sport played in the Spring term and continues to flourish as one of the schools successful sports. The girls start learning to play netball in Reception and as they progress through the years the girls compete in matches from year 3. The fixture list is extensive with matches during the week and on the occasional Saturday. Chesham Prep host a local schools tournament for all abilities as well as intra and inter school matches. The school is affiliated to England Netball and attend the local regional IAPS competition.

Rounders

Rounders is extremely popular as a summer term sport for all girls from Year 1. The fundamentals of batting and fielding are practiced and developed, and from Year 3 matches are enjoyed in the sunshine against local opposition.

Lacrosse

Pop lacrosse is a new sport that has been filtered into girls’ physical education over the last few years. The fundamentals of catching, throwing and scooping are taught in the junior school and within the senior school tactical attacking and defending principles are applied.

Swimming

There are many opportunities for pupils to immerse themselves in the water. The school uses the local facilities for weekly lesson for all pupils from Year 3. The instruction under our experienced coaches is exceptional with many recommendations to attend the local clubs. As well as inter-house galas and water-polo for all pupils, Chesham Prep enter the district Panagraphic league in the Autumn and Spring term. A group of talented individuals are selected for the ESSA and IAPS competitions with recent National successes.

Facilities

The school has a sports hall together with an all-weather pitch and a large playing field.

The full-size sports hall has been designed and equipped with an uncompromising eye for detail. The superb cushioned playing surface and first-rate facilities allow all sports and activities to be coached and practised to the highest standards. These include: cricket, hockey, tennis, football, netball, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, volleyball, judo, indoor field athletics and a host of PE related activities.

The all-weather pitch has enabled the department to develop and to increase significantly the range of sports offered, not only in the school curriculum but also within the extracurricular provision.

All sports are also played on our large playing field which is situated on site behind the Sports Hall.
