Rugby is one of the major boys’ games. Training commences at the beginning of the Michaelmas term. The boys start learning to play rugby in Reception and this is built on in games in the Prep School. We are affiliated to the ESRFU and as such follow the guidelines laid down in the RFU continuum concerning junior players.
As a department we are firm believers in allowing as many of the boys to play in competitive matches as possible. To this end, we regularly put out A, B, C and D fixtures and on occasions we are able to play E and F matches as well.
Rugby is a real strength of the school and the U9s are the current holders of the Davenies inter- school tournament. Our U9 and U11 teams qualify for the National schools rugby competition at Epsom College each year.
Cross Country is a popular activity for boys and girls. We enter the local schools competitions for years 3-6 and there are several external competitions, including the National Prep Schools Competition in Malvern.
Football is the main sport played in the Lent term and as with rugby, every boy is expected to represent the school in competitive matches. Last year we were able to field 19 different teams and this involved every boy in the school representing the school on a single day. Each team has a large number of matches throughout the season and as is the case with rugby we believe that football builds confidence in boys and really helps them feel part of a team and indeed the children feel proud to represent their school.
In Years 1-4 Wycombe Wanderers lead a number of football clubs throughout the year allowing for pupils to continue to develop their skills under the provision of excellent football coaches.
Cricket is the major boys’ sport in the summer and we field a senior school team and three or four teams at each of the age groups. Throughout the school the children are encouraged to play enjoyable winning cricket. Boys start to play with a hard ball in Year 4 and the skills are fine- tuned and by the time the children reach Year 6 we regularly have boys entered for county trials. The school have fantastic indoor nets in the sports hall with a bowling machine and this facility is also offered as an activity. As with all sports at Chesham Prep School cricket is played to build confidence, make friends and most importantly, to be enjoyed. Bucks County Coaches currently run a Cricket nets club.
Athletics is taught throughout the summer term when children learn all of the major track and field disciplines taught by specialist teachers. We enter several school competitions, including the National School Athletics competition.
There are many opportunities for pupils to immerse themselves in the water. The school uses the local facilities for weekly lesson for all pupils from Year 3. Please note that parents need to drop their child at Amersham Swimming Pool at 7.45 one morning a week. The instruction under our experienced coaches is exceptional with many recommendations to attend the local clubs. As well as inter-house galas and water-polo for all pupils, Chesham Prep enter the district Panagraphic league in the Autumn and Spring term. A group of talented individuals are selected for the ESSA and IAPS competitions with recent National successes.
