Drama

Each year children perform on stage and present a variety of work, from full-scale productions to smaller tableaux for school assemblies. There are busy and vibrant drama clubs with many enthusiastic members. The senior school drama production is a highlight of the school calendar.

We are delighted to be able to offer LAMDA lessons here at Chesham Prep. LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) is one of the world’s leading drama schools and the lessons lead to practical exams in communication and performance.

A LAMDA exam is the speech & drama equivalent of a music grade. As with music exams, LAMDA exams begin at the entry level, then culminate at Grade 8. The qualification is recognised by UCAS and exams are adjudicated by qualified LAMDA examiners, who will visit the school.

As we are part way through the school year we will initially be offering the Acting Exam (which is part of the Performance syllabus) to Years 5 and 6. However, from September 2023 we expect to expand the provision to include other year groups.

The acting category of exams aims to introduce key ideas in acting and performance. These elements include physical and vocal characterisation and understanding what a character wants and feels, then communicating those feelings through performance. The process of learning for this exam will not only stimulate creativity, but also encourage children to use their emotional intelligence.
