Destination Schools & 11+

It is our aim to ensure that children leave Chesham Prep School at 11 with at least one year’s academic advantage over national expectations for children of similar age. In practice, many children achieve a greater advantage than this. Children sit entrance tests for a wide number of local independent schools and many sit the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test at 11+.

Most children receive an offer from their parents’ first choice independent school; this is because the school has been carefully chosen to provide the most appropriate academic environment for each child.

11+ Results

Parents choose whether to enter their children for the Bucks 11+ Secondary Transfer Test for entry into Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools. As we are a partner school our pupils sit the test in the familiar setting of their own school. On average around 75% of our Year 6 pupils sit the 11+ Secondary Transfer Test in September of that school year. Across 3 classes there are usually 60 pupils in Year 6 each year.

Over the last eight years the average qualifying rate, of those who sat the test, has been 70%. The county average is approximately 37% (Source: Buckinghamshire Council website, Dec 2025).

Not all of those who qualify go on to Grammar schools as some families still choose to transfer to independent schools at 11+. Similarly not all those who receive offers to leading Independent Schools take up their offers. In 2025 for example; 20 Chesham Prep pupils received offers from Berkhamsted School (90% of those who applied) and 8 took up their places whilst the others moved on to the local Grammar schools.

Our 2025 leavers achieved an incredibly impressive qualifying rate of 84%. Most of our children in this year group received an offer from their preferred school.

Destination Schools

On leaving Chesham Prep School our children go on to a variety of schools. The Headteacher and Deputy Head Academic meet regularly with parents to discuss their children’s strengths and suggest suitable future schools. They also support our Year 6 pupils with interview practice for Independent school applications.

We remain the ‘independent’ independent school for transition to secondary school, with last year’s Year 6 pupils moving on to a total of 18 different senior schools: 5 different grammar schools, 5 excellent state secondary schools (4 in Herts and 1 in Bucks) and 8 different independent schools across the country.  We are very lucky to have such excellent schools locally, in a recent Times ranking of state secondaries Chesham Grammar and Dr Challoner’s Boys and Girls were in the top 40 state schools nationally.

We are truly proud to be able to offer parents such a wide variety of secondary schooling options.
