Languages and International Awareness at Chesham Prep

Throughout their time at Chesham Prep, children are introduced to and learn French and Spanish, with 1 lesson a week until Year 6, when pupils increase to 3 lessons a week. We see languages as a pivotal and extremely beneficial part of the curriculum at Chesham Prep, helping to improve all-around cognitive skills as well as enhancing soft skills such as problem-solving, empathising with others and critical thinking.

In the early years, children learn Spanish and French through song, dance and play and tactile learning experiences. Every lesson, led a specialist teacher, focuses on being fully immersive, enjoyable and fun where the enjoyment is key. Connecting new language to familiar activities – food likes and dislikes; traditional and joyful celebrations as well as through games and dance allows new language to bed in, almost without the children realising it. This bedrock of playful learning provides a strong base for when a more structured approach is introduced in Year 2 onwards, when the focus turns to the four key skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

From Years 2-4 the children take their foreign language learning back into the home with our Language bags programme. The bag contains games, a book and a simple recipe for the child to prepare. Enjoyable activities which again ensure full immersion and enjoyment. This approach continues to run into Year 6, where the pupils run a French market for the day.

By the time children reach Years 5 and 6, they are ready to explore their skills with the outside world. A trip abroad to either Spain or France in Year 5 and 6 further develops language abilities, as does our annual participation in the UK Linguistics Olympiad, a national competition which challenges pupils to solve linguistic puzzles, developing their logical thinking as well as their language capabilities. We celebrate the myriad of languages exhibited at both this event as well as at the European Day of Languages each September. Our participation in all of these additional learning opportunities, has allowed us to work towards full accreditation of the Intermediate International Schools Award.

Through steady, incremental and always enjoyable learning steps, children are well  prepared for language studies at secondary school.
