Performing Arts

Music at Chesham Prep

At Chesham Prep, music isn’t just a subject, it’s a core part of school life and a pillar of our exceptional performing arts provision. Every child, from Nursery to Year 6, receives specialist music lessons twice a week, led by our experienced and passionate music teachers. From the first beat to the final performance, our pupils are immersed in a rich, joyful musical curriculum that builds confidence, creativity and technical skill.

Our dedicated music department is well-equipped, with class sets of ukuleles, glockenspiels, djembes, MIDI keyboards and SoundTrap for digital composition, ensuring that children experience both traditional and contemporary music-making. Whether it’s singing in harmony, mastering rhythm or composing their own pieces, pupils grow into capable, expressive musicians.

A School Where Every Child Performs

From the earliest years, all pupils take part in concerts, nativities, and full-scale musical productions, building stage presence, performance skills and a true love for the arts. Our five school choirs, including the auditioned Senior Choir and inclusive Singing for Wellbeing clubs, offer outstanding opportunities for vocal development, while a range of instrumental ensembles, including Orchestra, Wind, Strings, Brass and Guitar Ensembles, ensure that musicians of every level are supported and challenged.

Specialist Tuition & Musical Excellence

We deliver over 170 individual music lessons every week through a talented team of visiting professionals. Our pupils thrive under expert guidance, preparing for ABRSM music exams which can be taken right here on site, thanks to our status as an official ABRSM exam centre. This ensures every child benefits from a familiar, supportive setting as they progress through their musical journey.

Productions

At Chesham Prep, our exceptional performing arts programme shines through in full-scale school productions in Year 4 and Year 6, complete with an exciting array of costumes, props, singing, dancing and ensemble performance. These high-energy, confidence-building shows give every child a chance to shine on stage or behind the scenes, developing creativity, public speaking skills, teamwork, and a lifelong love of the arts. It’s a highlight of our vibrant curriculum and a key reason families choose our school for its outstanding performing arts opportunities.

Drama at Chesham Preparatory School

At Chesham Preparatory School, our drama curriculum is designed to nurture confidence, creativity, and collaboration. Through drama, pupils develop essential skills in teamwork and communication, as well as the courage to take creative risks, qualities that enrich their learning across all subjects.

Our programme also fosters cultural literacy, encouraging pupils to become curious, reflective, and active thinkers who appreciate the power of performance and storytelling.

Performance is at the heart of our drama curriculum. From class assemblies and year-group productions to whole-school events and community celebrations, pupils have regular opportunities to perform and share their talents. These experiences grow in scale and ambition as children progress through the school, culminating in the highly anticipated Senior Production- a celebration of their achievements in acting, singing, and dance.

LAMDA

Our co-curricular LAMDA programme offers pupils a unique platform to further explore acting, public speaking, and technical performance techniques, gaining recognised qualifications along the way. Whether nurturing futures in acting or enhancing everyday presentation skills, LAMDA empowers every pupil to express themselves and gain valuable skills and experiences.
