Reception

Reception is a welcoming, friendly and, above all, happy place where children can foster a love of learning, an inquisitive mind and a sense of self-worth. We believe that a happy child is motivated to learn; every day we witness that when children feel happy, safe and valued, they are more engaged, curious and motivated to learn. We value and reward all their progresses, both in learning core subjects, but also in how they behave – kindness, good behaviour and thoughtfulness.

We pride ourselves on developing very close relationships with both the children and their families to ensure that this crucial first step in their education is a very positive one. With teaching assistants in all the classes, children enjoy an excellent teacher-to-pupil ratio of never more than 1 to 10.

Reception offers a full and broad Curriculum:

– Daily lessons in Maths and Literacy. We teach the children to read using a synthetic phonic approach which all staff have been specifically trained to deliver. We provide developmentally appropriate teaching and learning for all children incorporating play based and practical learning.

– Weekly lessons include two PE sessions, plus swimming lessons in the Summer term, two music sessions, Spanish, French and ICT sessions

– Regular outdoors lessons are held in the Forest School area

The children learn in bright, stimulating and spacious classrooms. All the classrooms are linked enabling the children to enjoy free flow both through the classrooms and into the Early Years garden. We believe that this access to outdoors space where they are free to play and roam, is a vital part of their development and happiness.

Wraparound Care

At Chesham Prep we understand how important wraparound care in a safe and happy environment is for many families. We provide a Breakfast Club service and two after school clubs – all are accessible to every pupil in the school. This is in addition to the after school activity clubs. The supervisory staff are fully trained and qualified and provide an interesting and varied programme of activities for the children.
