In Years 1 and 2 there are two classes in each year group with up to 20 children in each class. All core subjects are taught by a class teacher and a full-time teaching assistant. The children also head off to lots of specialist lessons including French, Spanish, Computing, Music, Swimming, PE and Games. We love teaching this age group because the children make so much progress at this stage across many different subjects and activities.
We make learning fun and engaging in order to captivate the childrens’ imagination and enthusiasm. We develop broad themes which connect the different aspects of the curriculum; for example Year 1, inspired by the film Encanto, are learning all about South America. We are covering stories from South America in Literacy, studying the different animals from that continent in Science and have turned our cloakroom into a Equatorial Rainforest as an art project.
Celebrating success is key to building confidence and the children’s motivation to learn. We celebrate academic achievements with weekly merit certificates in assembly and, if a child has gone above and beyond, they go to see Mr Otter to receive a Headteacher’s award. But it’s not only about academics; we are constantly encouraging the children to be kind and caring towards one another and have a special gold book to record these achievements in. The children are always very proud of themselves if they make it into the gold book!
We also celebrate children’s interests and achievements outside of school and they enjoy sharing medals and certificates with us in assembly. The teachers frequently give award house points to the children. These can be for excellent work, good listening skills, lovely manners; anything that has particularly impressed them; everyone is very motivated to contribute to their House success.

Clubs, activities and trips
The children in Years 1 and 2 enjoy lots of special days throughout the year when we might invite specialist companies in to work with the children or take them out on day trip e.g. Year 1 have Castle Day when a company called “History Off The Page” turn the hall into a castle and get the children acting out all the jobs in a castle and even hold a feast with goblets and entertainment! In Year 2, the children visit St Alban’s Cathedral as part of their Religious Education studies.
