Years 3 and 4 are exceptionally important years as the children grow tremendously in independence, which in turn leads to greater confidence and self-esteem. Children attend school for the full day until 4pm which again represents a big step in “growing-up”.
The emphasis in Year 3 is on extending independent learning by taking responsibility both in school and when completing homework tasks. This development continues into Year 4, such that the time they leave Year 4 the children are fully ready for the challenges of a senior curriculum.
Academic success is encouraged and acknowledged and the teachers ensure the children are challenged appropriately every step of the way. At the same time the many highly valued qualities such as kindness, good manners and respect continue to be rewarded.
In Year 3 we increase from 2 to 3 classes, each with 20 children. New pupils are integrated with the current Year 2 children to create 3 parallel mixed-ability forms. In Year 4 the children are split into sets for Mathematics.
Throughout Junior School, the pupils spend the majority of their day with their class teacher for core and most foundation subjects, whilst enjoying the opportunity to move to specialist rooms to be taught by individual subject teachers for Spanish, French, ICT, Music&Drama, PE, Games and Swimming. In Junior School all the children will experience playing as members of a sports team for the first time against other schools.
Pastoral provision is exceptionally high as they are very much under the wing of a form teacher who liaises regularly with the specialist teachers. Each Year 3 and 4 class also has their own dedicated teaching assistant.
